Garry Flitcroft has been in charge at Chorley since 2010

Garry Flitcroft has not played in The FA Cup for almost a decade, but on Saturday he will be attempting to steer his Chorley side into the First Round Proper.

As a player Flitcroft came within a whisker of reaching The FA Cup Final in 2005, but now his sole focus is on guiding his team part-timers through the final qualifying phase - a feat the club has not managed for over two decades.

Flitcroft’s side – currently third in the Conference North - take on Conference Premier high flyers FC Halifax Town in Lancashire on Saturday, and the former Manchester City and Blackburn midfielder says it is a tie everyone is relishing.

The club has a distinguished history at semi-professional level.

The ‘Magpies’ recently celebrated their 125th anniversary as a Football Association and have competed in six leagues since their formation back in 1883.

The highest level they have competed is in 1987-88, when they played one tier below the football league, and topped the table briefly, but came back down after two seasons.

The Lancashire club also has Cup pedigree and have qualified for the First Round Proper on nine occasions.

However, despite making it past the qualifying stage five times in the 12 years between 1978 and 1990, it is a feat that have not manager to replicate since.

And it is a record Flitcroft will do his utmost to reverse.
