EMBEDDING SUSTAINABILITY AT THE FA

Sustainability is central to our purpose to inspire positive change through football

It reflects our role as a national governing body, and as the custodian of two world-class venues. We believe embedding sustainability across our operations is essential to building a resilient organisation which is grounded in our values to aim high, achieve together, and embrace difference.

Playing for the Future

Launched in 2023, the purpose of this five-year strategy is to drive forward our environmental ambitions and be a role model in shaping a positive football future for all. We identify actions to address challenges in our direct control, as well as actions to influence and collaborate with our wider stakeholder community. It was created through extensive consultation with a wide range of football stakeholders and focuses on the following three core areas:

Shoot for Net Zero – Focussed on energy & climate action
Save Our Resources – Focussed on resource efficiency (waste, water, nature and biodiversity)
Make an Impact – Focussed on how we engage our stakeholders and the wider football ecosystem

Delivering Our Strategy

The FA’s imperative is to steward the future of football. In a rapidly changing world, football is feeling the effects of planetary change – extreme weather has impacted our events, energy prices have hit our clubs and communities, and broader issues like pollution and social inequality are shaping how we play the game.

To protect football’s future, we are acting across every part of our organisation. From managing our energy, waste, and water, to bolstering our relationship with our partners, suppliers and the football community, we are continuing to establish and deliver on shared goals across the football pyramid.

Our first-ever sustainability report shares our journey so far, and documents how we are transforming ambition into action, as well as the challenges ahead.

Governance

Driving sustainability across the business relies on a growing network of engaged people. We have two sustainability working groups across the FA, aligned to the two assets we operate: Wembley Stadium and St. George’s Park. Explore how ‘Playing for the Future’ is being delivered across our sites:
