Today at the Euros: Teams gear up for matchday two

The 2013/14 UEFA Women's U17 Championship Finals is being staged in England

SEMI-FINALS OR BUST (MAYBE...)

It’s matchday two in the UEFA Women’s U17 Championship Finals – and the fate of a few nations will no doubt be settled by this evening.

If Italy, Germany and Spain win they will seal their place in the last four, while England, Scotland and France will all be hoping to recover from opening day defeats. But if results go against the latter two they will be unable to make it out of Group B.

A win for Lois Fidler’s Young Lions over Austria in Chesterfield would give them every chance of progressing to the semi-finals. The Head Coach has asked her players to forget about Tuesday’s loss to the Italians and produce another organised performance.

SGP’s GOT TALENT

It’s not all about the football here at St. George’s Park, though.

A key factor of a player’s development is in learning how to deal with ‘down time’ during a tournament. And while that predominantly refers to rest and recovery, it’s important for them to be able to switch off from what can be quite an intense environment.

So UEFA and the Local Organising Committee have decided to put on a talent night for the eight teams, who have to wow a panel of judges however they see fit – be that freestyling with a football, singing, dancing or maybe even ventriloquism. A local radio DJ has also been mooted as a potential compere for Saturday’s festivities.

But for now, the players are focused purely on the football and many will have one eye on the semi-finals.
