Lois Fidler said her England Women’s U17 players are delighted to be a part of a European Championship Finals on home soil.

It is the first time UEFA has staged this tournament outside of Switzerland and it helps The FA wrap up its 150th anniversary celebrations.

And, despite their opening day defeat by Italy, the Young Lions Head Coach believes the players are revelling in this "once in a lifetime" opportunity.

Fidler said: "They are loving it and they’re proud to get this chance.

"They realise how important it is to be involved in these development tournaments and how crucial it is to get the caps, the exposure and experience of the atmosphere to help them ultimately progress through the age groups and hopefully in to the senior squad one day.

"For them to come out here and deliver in front of a home crowd when they’ve never played a competitive international qualifying game, which is the case for so many of them, I think it was a big ask but they responded fantastically."

England’s opening group game in Telford attracted over 2,000 fans and Fidler admitted having problems getting messages across to her team amid the fervent atmosphere generated by swaths of local school children.

This is the first time England have qualified for these Finals since 2008 and as well as the noise inside the stadium, the players are having to get used to being interviewed by the media, having their photographs taken at PR functions and the various events that occur during a major tournament.

On Wednesday ‘Lego Friends’, one of the tournament’s key sponsors, brought a Lego replica of St. George’s Park to the national football centre for the girls to look at.

And Fidler has urged her charges to embrace the whole Euro experience.

She added: "We hosted Euro 2005 and I remember stepping out at the Etihad Stadium and there were 30,000 people there.

"The atmosphere was electric and just to get a snapshot of that here in Telford, being well supported by our future generations, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"And things like the Lego event - everything has been brilliant so far."

England face Austria in their second Group A game on Friday at Chesterfield's Proact Stadium.
