Mason Greenwood celebrates his goal against Russia at the Pirelli Stadium

A fantastic second-half fightback from the Young Lions saw Steve Cooper's England come back from a goal down to beat ten-man Russia by 2-1 at the Pirelli Stadium.

England were left stunned as Russia took a shock early lead after just 12 seconds when Ethan Laird brought down Llia Vortonikov in the box to gift the visitors a penalty - which Krasnodar forward Maksim Kutovoi coolly converted.

Russia continued to pile pressure on the England backline after that, hitting them hard on the counter with Kutovoi finding himself in the thick of the action once again, forcing a fine save out of Arsenal's Arthur Okwonko with five minutes on the clock.

England’s first real chance of the game came through Manchester United midfielder Mason Greenwood, who fired an effort just wide of Sergei Eshchenko's far post, and minutes later Reading's Jack Nolan saw his fierce curling effort sneak just wide.

The balance of the game tipped slightly in the hosts' favour as Russia were reduced to ten men five minutes before half time, with Dmitry Markitsov seeing straight red for striking Louie Sibley in an off-the-ball incident.

And a rejuvenated England side came out for the second half looking dangerous and full of energy - Nolan spearheaded the attack and almost found the net after getting onto the end of a cross at the back post, with his volley off target.

The equaliser came on 49 minutes, after Chelsea's Clinton Mola picked up a loose ball and smashed home through a crowded Russian box into the back of the net, pulling the Young Lions deservedly level.

On top and comfortably controlling the game, England were rewarded for their dominance seven minutes later when the lead was doubled.

The impressive Greenwood did fantastically well to make space for himself on the edge of the box before unleashing a piercing shot past Eshchenko and into the back of the net.

In response, a determined Russia refused to roll over for the Young Lions, trying their best to get themselves back into what had been a hotly-contested game, with Aleksei Nikitenkov's free-kick very nearly finding its way in on 72 minutes.

England were then almost caught out in the dying moments as Kutovoi stole the ball from the feet of keeper Okwonko, but his ball across the face of the goal was thankfully cleared by substitute Vontae Daley-Campbell to seal an impressive win.
