Steph Houghton called on her Manchester City side to keep up their recent dominance after lifting the SSE Women’s FA Cup trophy for the first time in their history.

The Citizens swept aside Birmingham City 4-1 on Saturday thanks to goals from Izzy Christiansen, Carli Lloyd, Lucy Bronze and Jill Scott, and the victory means City now hold all three domestic honours.

And the Man City captain heaped praise on her team-mates for their spectacular display in front of a vociferous crowd at Wembley Stadium, connected by EE.

“The girls were amazing, we played some great stuff especially in the first half and it is fantastic feeling to have won The FA Cup,” the England international said.

“We have a great winning mentality and we just have to keep this form up throughout the season.

“We want retain every trophy and keep winning – that’s what great sides do.”

Keira Walsh was named as player of the match and the 20-year-old was in a similarly buoyant mood after helping the FA WSL 1 champions lift another trophy.

She added: “This is a special day for all of us. We all worked so hard and it was a real team effort.

“To win a cup final at Wembley is a special feeling and one I will never forget. We have a great squad and I cannot wait to keep our form going.”

And FIFA World Player of the Year Lloyd – whose first-half strike helped Nick Cushing’s side race into a three-goal lead before the break – said her side showed fantastic character to dispatch the Midlands club.

The 34-year-old explained: “We didn’t underestimate Birmingham; we went out there, played our own game, and won it in great style.

“The character in the squad is just incredible, they are a special group and we just want to keep winning.”
