Plymouth go on to face Burnley in the next round

Plymouth Argyle caused the shock of the FA Youth Cup third round by knocking last season’s runner-up Manchester City out on Thursday.

City had England Under 17s captain Joel Latibeaudiere in their side but lost on penalties 6-5 after the match went through 120 minutes without a goal.

Michael Peck slotted home the decisive kick for Argyle after goalkeeper Michael Cooper saved Ian Carlo Poveda-Ocampo’s effort.

It means City will not contest their fourth consecutive final after three straight defeats to Chelsea while Plymouth go on to face Burnley in the fourth round.

Argyle’s academy head coach Kevin Hodges said: "I am so proud. We managed to see it through to extra-time, when there were some weary legs and weary minds, but we managed to see the game through.

"I don't think the boys will understand until a few days time what they have actually achieved.”

It was a bad week for the Manchester clubs, with United also bowing out on penalties as they lost to Derby County on Wednesday.

The match finished 2-2 at full time before Derby won 3-1 on penalties.

Elsewhere this week, Southampton progressed with a comfortable 4-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers while Colchester United saw off Crewe Alexandra 2-0.

A superb strike from Stephen Walker helped Middlesbrough beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0 and Reading also progressed with a 2-1 win against Millwall.

Xavier Amaechi scored twice as Arsenal secured safe passage to the next round with a 2-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday, while Liverpool eased past Hartlepool United 5-1.
