Andorra 0-1 England U21s

A second-half header from Tom Davies seals the points for England in the Pyrenees

Tuesday 10 Oct 2017

England U21s consolidated their place on top of their Euro qualifying group and made it two wins from two this week with a victory in Andorra.

A second-half goal from Tom Davies, his first for the U21s, proved enough to secure three points for the Young Lions on their trip into the Pyrenees.

Boss Aidy Boothroyd had warned in the build-up to the game that Andorra would be no pushover and would attempt to come out and play against his side.

And he wasn’t wrong. The hosts put in a solid shift and proved more than capable of disrupting play to frustrate and hold the Young Lions at a relative arm’s length on a difficult surface during the first half, before goalkeeper Francisco Costa put on a masterclass of his own after the break.

England will feel they could've scored more though and their first chance came in the early stages, when a low cross from the left found Dominic Calvert-Lewin free in the six-yard box. The Everton man opened his body to position himself for a finish but raised his shot over the bar from close range.

Kieran Dowell then tried his luck with a free-kick from the edge of the area, but after clipping a shot over the wall the ball dipped just over the bar.

But it was another man with Everton connections who broke the deadlock in the early stages of the second half though, as Davies glanced Kyle Walker-Peters’ left-wing cross past Costa.

Andorra weren’t without their chances either and Albert Alavedra had their best opening when he got in behind the Lions’ defence and saw his low shot diverted behind among a flurry of set-pieces flung into the England box.

Calvert-Lewin had the ball in the net again after helping to guide Ademola Lookman’s shot over the line, but an earlier offside flag ruled that effort out.

Lookman then had another chance to seal it in the 82nd minute when he found space at the far post to line up a shot, only for Costa to make a remarkable recovery save to keep his team in the game.

But with the clock ticking down and the home crowd urging their team to go in search of what would have been a surprise result, England were never out of their comfort zone as they managed the game out to take the three points home.
