Man City celebrate after Isobel Christiansen's goal

Goalscorer Isobel Christiansen believes Manchester City’s victory over reigning FA WSL 1 champions Liverpool prove her side are not about to take their foot off the gas when it matters most.

City closed the gap on league leaders Chelsea to two points with two games remaining following a impressive victory in which Christiansen and Natasha Harding got their names on the scoresheet.

And it capped a good few days for Christiansen who received her first call-up to the senior side earlier in the week.

"The credit goes to the team. We've done exactly what we aimed to do at the start at the game and we did exceptionally well,” she said.

“We moved the ball around really well and we scored two goals and I'm delighted that we've managed to maintain our form despite some bad injuries.

"The coach has spoke to us about the business end of the season and it's important we get results and we've done that again with a great team performance under our belts.

"To have seven of us from City meeting with the England squad on Monday is wonderful. We're absolutely delighted that the form of the girls has been recognised.

“The players who played in Canada are proving their worth and they are exceptional players to play with week in and week out.”

City were a threat from the outset with Christiansen in particular standing out, crossing for Jennifer Beattie to head against the bar before herself breaking the deadlock shortly before the break with a neat finish following a burst down the right from Lucy Bronze.

The hosts continued to press into the second half too, with Libby Stout tipping Nikita Parris’ curling effort over just two minutes after the restart.

Stout was called into action again on the hour mark with the keeper getting down well to save Harding’s close range effort before the latter made the game safe with 15 minutes left after converting Georgia Stanway’s left wing cross from close range.

“We tried to give them a good game and did our best but it wasn't our night”

"I'm disappointed we lost but to be fair Manchester City were the better side and you have to take it for what it is. It's hard to be happy when you lose,” said Liverpool keeper Stout.

"It's tough. You look at City and they're playing really great football at the moment which is great to see in the English game.

“It's definitely a step forward from last year. They play with each other internationally and with their club and you can tell by their movement that they know where players are going to be.
