Toni Duggan says it is an “honour” to be named Vauxhall England Women’s Player of the Year and has thanked the fans for their support.

The Manchester City striker played a major part in a fantastic year for England as they qualified for the 2015 FIFA World Cup.

Duggan, 23, scored six goals in her ten international appearances in the last 12 months, and also bagged a hat-trick in their 9-0 win over Montenegro in April.

Her swashbuckling performances have impressed fans and ensured she took the majority of votes in the poll on the England Supporters Club website.

"It's a great honour for me to receive this award,” said Duggan, who has an overall record of 14 goals in 24 outings for England.

“I would like to thank all the fans who voted and also thank them for the great support they have given the team and myself this year.

“Awards like this mean so much, but I must point out the magnificent job the team has done, not only in securing World Cup qualification but the way in which we have achieved it.

“It has been a brilliant 2014 and hopefully we can build on this with a massive year ahead.”

England kick off 2015 with a match against two-time world champions USA at Milton Keynes on 13 February.

Mark Sampson’s side continue their preparation for this summer’s World Cup in Canada after qualifying in style with a 100 per cent record.

And Duggan says she will be focused on impressing the boss to ensure she secures her spot in the squad for the Finals.

“The World Cup in Canada will be a fantastic stage for us all, the hard work has already started,” said the former Everton striker.

“I, along with the rest of the girls, will be giving it everything to make sure we are on that plane in June.”

She added: “Competition for places is fierce but that will only bring out the best in us all. Here's to an exciting year ahead.”
