Wilkin would 'love to repeat' 2013 FA Trophy success

Wrexham boss Kevin Wilkin witnessed his side winning The FA Trophy as a fan at Wembley in 2013 – but now that he is the manager he wants nothing more than to replicate this success.

The Red Dragons' historic penalty shootout triumph over Grimsby Town was their first of two appearances at Wembley that season – with the club also playing under the arch in the Conference Play-Off Final in what was a remarkable year that wrote itself into Welsh football folklore.

And Wilkin's side go into their second leg against Torquay United having secured a 0-0 home draw against Forest Green Rovers in the Conference on Tuesday night, when he fielded an experimental side with his eyes firmly cast on Saturday's Semi-Final second leg at Plainmoor.

The Welsh club go into this second leg with a one-goal advantage after winning the first leg 2-1 and Wilkin believes that despite failing to beat Torquay at Plainmoor in their last six attempts, previous form is not a cause for concern.

Wilkin said: "Statistics are there to be broken and changed and that is what we will look to do on Saturday.

"We are not going to sit there and defend for 90 minutes – that has never been our aim – we will go out there and try to take the game to Torquay."

The 47-year-old has never made a Wembley appearance as a manager but feels that making it now would help give Wrexham some deserved success in what has been a difficult season.

"It would give everybody around the town a huge lift; our league campaign has faltered a little bit over the Christmas period, but we have been very good in cup competitions," added Wilkin.

"Making the Wembley Final would be big; Wembley is the home of football so to take the club there again would be fantastic.

"In the training ground there is a big photo of the final penalty going in to win the 2013 Final and photos of the players celebrating, so it is still fresh in everyone's minds.

"Every time we turn up for training there is stuff there to remind us of the success and we would love to repeat that."
