Hargreaves sets FA Trophy Final target for Torquay

Torquay boss Chris Hargreaves is aiming for The FA Trophy Final

Torquay United have endured a difficult 12 months both on and off the pitch.

But being just one step away from a Wembley Final has made manager Chris Hargreaves want to go on and "achieve something" special.

The Gulls, who have suffered financial problems and relegation from League Two last season, secured their place against Wrexham in the two-legged FA Trophy Semi-Final with a 1-0 win over Northern Premier League side FC United of Manchester, while Wrexham won 1-0 at Halifax.

Both teams are floating around mid-table in the Conference Premier and have locked horns twice this season with Torquay winning 2-1 and drawing 0-0.

Now Hargreaves believes that The Trophy can throw up many possibilities with Saturday’s first leg tie at the Racecourse Ground being no exception.

"We know a bit about Wrexham but I don’t think the history of performances and results matter, it will be a tough test for us," said Hargreaves.

"Wrexham want to get to The Final just as much as we do, so we have to go there with a specific approach and fight our cause so that we are in a good position for the second leg.

"This competition suddenly gets serious when you get to the Semi-Finals and you have the chance of getting to Wembley.

"I haven’t achieved what I wanted in the league and I want a team that can challenge for promotion but this is a really special addition to the season and being in this position now, we want to go on and achieve something."

Both sides have been in good form with Torquay winning three out of their last four games while Wrexham are unbeaten in their last five.

Hargreaves has experienced winning at Wembley as a player but sees winning under the Arch as a manager as a bigger triumph.

"With what has gone on with me as the manager, it would be winning The FA Trophy as a manager," he admitted.

"Getting promoted as a captain of your side, you can never beat that, but to achieve it as a manager with what has happened at the club - it would eclipse anything."
