England U21s POTY contender: James Ward-Prowse

James Ward-Prowse was named England U21s captain in September

The final contender for the Vauxhall England Under-21 Player of the Year award is the skipper, James Ward-Prowse.

Gareth Southgate had obviously seen enough from the Southampton midfielder in his previous 13 caps to hand him the Three Lions armband on a permanent basis in September.

But it was not a role that was alien to Ward-Prowse as he was the U21 captain in a 3-2 win over Germany in March.

He marked the occasion by scoring the winner, completing a sublime 35-pass move during which all 11 England players touched the ball.

In total, Ward-Prowse played in nine of England’s 11 matches in 2015 and scored three goals – the other two came against Norway in September and Switzerland last month.
