Andre Wright’s first-half double ensured Torquay United made no mistake at the second time of asking as they beat Chesham United 2-0 in their FA Trophy first-round replay on Tuesday evening.

Only a last-minute save by goalkeeper Daniel Lavercombe had kept Torquay in the competition when they drew 0-0 with their Southern League Premier Division opponents first time around on Sunday.

But Wright’s coolly-taken double ensured the Gulls will host fellow National League outfit Wrexham in the second round in January.

The on-loan West Bromwich Albion striker first turned home Alex Fisher’s neat touch from close-range before he headed in player-manager Kevin Nicholson’s pinpoint cross a few minutes later.

Another National League side, Gateshead, also booked their place in round two against lower-league opposition as they came from behind to down Stocksbridge Park Steels 4-1.

The Northern Premier League Divsion One South side had already eliminated four teams in this year’s competition and looked on track to add a fifth when Scott Ruthven’s powerful sixth-minute finish put them 1-0 ahead.

But Nathan Buddle restored parity just before the break as he converted Jeff Wrightson’s cross before Ryan Bowman headed a second, substitute Gus Mafuta lashed home a third and Danny Johnson completed the scoring from close-range late on – a long trip to Eastleigh awaiting the Heed in the next round.

There was a simple 5-0 win for last season’s quarter-finalists Halifax as Kingsley James’ double was supplemented by goals from Shaquille McDonald, Nicky Wroe and Conor Hughes to end Tamworth’s participation in this season’s FA Trophy.

Gavin Rothery’s penalty, a Matty Devine own goal and Tom Craddock’s strike proved just enough for Guiseley to edge past Burscough 3-2 while Truro City made it through to the second round for the first time in their history with a 1-0 victory over Cirencester thanks to Shane White’s 86th-minute penalty.

Meanwhile, AFC Fylde and Skelmersdale will need a replay after a dramatic 4-4 draw at Kellamergh Park.

Two goals from Danny Rowe and one from Danny Lloyd meant Fylde were cruising at 3-0 up but Skelmersdale roared back with four goals in 18 minutes before Rowe completed his hat-trick in the 88th minute to nick a draw.

Southport and Worcester City will also require a replay after they drew 0-0 while the same is true of Altrincham and Leamington following a 1-1 tie.
