Luke Shaw says Wayne Rooney's achievement of reaching 100 caps is "unbelievable" and admits it's a target he'd love to reach himself.

The Manchester United defender is back in the England senior squad this week after helping the Under-21s qualify for the European Championship Finals last month.

And as the Three Lions prepare for their final two games of the year against Slovenia and Scotland, Shaw was full of praise for his captain for both England and Manchester United.

"When you look at it, 100 caps for England is one of the biggest things you can achieve," said Shaw.

"What he’s done has been unbelievable, for club and country. It’s been spectacular.

"Hopefully there are many more [caps] to come because he showed people in the last game what he’s capable of and what he can do.

"I’m sure he and his family will be proud and everyone at United is extremely proud of him too."

Shaw became a club-mate of Rooney's in the summer after lining up alongside the United skipper for England at the World Cup, when the 19-year-old made his switch from Southampton to Old Trafford.

And he admits Rooney has been a huge influence on him since heading north.

"He’s helped a lot. He’s helped me especially since I came here," Shaw told MUTV.

"He helped me settle in and he’s always willing to give me advice and talk to me on and off the pitch.

"It’s really something for me as a young player, for your club and country captain to want to talk to you and give you advice."

With three senior caps to him name, Shaw's international career is relatively young compared to Rooney's.

However, having made his debut as an 18-year-old against Denmark earlier this year, he hopes he can follow in the footsteps of England's latest centurion.

"If you look at where I am now and where he was, we’re on similar paths," said Shaw.

"Hopefully I can take the same path he took and achieve 100 caps around his age now."
