There’s also a return to the squad for Manchester United’s Ashley Young, whose last cap came over four years ago as a substitute in a 0-0 draw with Ukraine during the qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose is also back in the squad after missing the last few games through injury.

“We’re in a position now where we’ve qualified for the World Cup and we always wanted to look at the team and how we want it to evolve,” revealed Southgate, in relation to the younger players he’s called up.

“This is an opportunity to look at new players and a different way of playing and I think the beauty of my position is that I know the young players in the system.

“These lads are players who, right through the age groups, have been recognised as being our best players and they’re all playing well with their clubs and having a good impact.

“This is a great opportunity to see if they can fit into the senior team and they’ve got the chance to stay there if they do well.”

The squad will report to St. George’s Park on Monday to begin their preparations for the home double-header, with current World Cup holders Germany first up on Friday 10 November.

Brazil are then the visitors to Wembley four days later on Tuesday 14 November for England's final game of the calendar year.
