England to play Brazil and Germany at Wembley after sealing World Cup qualification

Thursday 05 Oct 2017
England's World Cup warm-up will begin in November with two games at Wembley Stadium

England are to play fellow FIFA World Cup finalists Germany and Brazil in back-to-back international matches at Wembley Stadium in November.

Reigning world champions Germany will travel to London on Friday 10 November before five-time winners Brazil arrive four days later for the Bobby Moore Fund International on Tuesday 14 November with both games kicking-off at 8pm.

The matches will be the first for Gareth Southgate’s squad after securing qualification for next summer’s finals in Russia with a 1-0 victory against Slovenia on Thursday before concluding their qualifying campaign away in Lithuania on Sunday.

The Three Lions began their 2017 fixtures against Germany in March, where they lost by 1-0 in Dortmund thanks to a super strike from Lukas Podolski in what was his last international.

Germany, who have four World Cup wins to their name, last came to the national stadium four years ago in November 2013, when Per Mertesacker’s solitary goal gave them a 1-0 victory as both nations began their preparations for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

On the head-to-head, England and Germany have met on 31 occasions with the Three Lions winning 13 of those games and drawing three.

For Brazil, their most recent trip to Wembley came back in February 2013, with the South American side losing 2-1 thanks to Frank Lampard’s second-half winner, after Fred had cancelled out Wayne Rooney’s opener.

The nations met again a few months later in June, when England travelled to Rio for the opening of the new Maracana Stadium.

An entertaining game ended in a 2-2 draw, as Fred put the hosts ahead before second-half goals from Rooney and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain put the Three Lions ahead only for Paulinho to level things up with a late equaliser.

Overall, the two nations have met on 25 occasions with Brazil having the edge with 11 wins and four draws.
