Alex Mowatt celebrates after scoring the winner at Cambridge

Leeds United survived a scare at Cambridge United to book their place in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round.

Uche Ikpeazu fired the hosts ahead on 25 minutes, but Garry Monk’s side bounced back in the second half and won the tie thanks to a goal apiece by Stuart Dallas and Alex Mowatt.

The Championship outfit will now travel to either Wimbledon or Sutton United in round four.

Leeds, the 1972 Cup winners, might have taken a fourth-minute lead when Mowatt played in Marcus Antonsson, but the Sweden attacker’s cross-shot clipped the top of the crossbar.

Buoyed by a vociferous home backing, Cambridge put that early fright behind them in fantastic fashion.

They hassled and harried their famous visitors, refusing to give them any time or space.

The Yellows’ intensity led to three quick-fire Leeds bookings – and soon after Cambridge went ahead.

In-form Luke Berry hit a 25-yard free-kick into the defensive wall, but the ball fell kindly to Ikpeazu, who turned Tyler Denton and smashed a low shot beyond Marco Silvestri at his near post to send the locals into raptures.

Shaun Derry’s side were on the front foot for the majority of the first half, but were indebted to their goalkeeper, Will Norris, for maintaining their one-goal lead just before the break.

Dallas whipped in a corner and Liam Cooper’s powerful header was denied by Norris at point blank range.

But Leeds were much improved after the break and turned the game on its head four minutes either side of the hour mark.

The impressive Mowatt stood up a cross at the back post and Dallas climbed highest to nod the ball back across goal to level for the Yorkshire giants.

The goalscorer then turned provider, delivering a corner which Pontus Jansson headed goalwards, and Mowatt got the final touch to help it home.
