Paul Williams leaves The FA to join Swansea City

Tuesday 15 Nov 2016

Paul Williams has left The FA to take up the role of first-team coach at Swansea City.

The 45-year-old will join Bob Bradley’s backroom staff at the Premier League outfit after 16 months working with teams at St. George’s Park.

Williams was brought in as a specialist coach last summer to support development teams and was recently interim head coach of the England Under-20s.

“I would like to thank Paul for his support over the last 16 months,” said Matt Crocker, The FA’s head of development team coaching.

“Although disappointed he will be leaving us, I wish Paul every success in trying to help Swansea retain their Premier League status.

“Meanwhile, we will continue to focus our efforts on ensuring we bring success this summer with several key UEFA and FIFA finals.”

Williams added: “It has been a real honour to work for The FA over what has been a great 16 months, and I’d like to wish all age groups the best for the future.

“I was fortunate enough to work with some fantastic staff during this time and I’m proud of the fact that there are really talented players coming through the England system.”

As a player, Williams began his career at Derby County before playing in the top flight for Coventry City and Southampton.

The Burton-born ex-defender started coaching in America before three years as youth development coach at Southampton as well as stints working with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aldershot Town and Eastleigh.

More recently and during his time at The FA, Williams was a member of Brentford’s backroom staff and took charge of Nottingham Forest at the end of the 2015/16 season.
