England squads ready for action over international week

Tuesday 22 Mar 2016
The England Under-19s squad are in Spain this week for Elite Round Qualifiers

Roy Hodgson’s squad aren’t the only England team reporting for international duty this week, with five other groups preparing for action.

As well as the seniors, St. George’s Park is hosting four other England teams this week with Gareth Southgate’s Under-21s squad joined by the Under-17s and Under-19s before the Under-18s arrive later this week.

By then, Aidy Boothroyd’s U19s will be further afield in southern Spain where they face Euro Qualifiers in the Elite Round and the U18s also start the international week overseas in Austria.

And it’s Neil Dewsnip’s side who are the first of those teams to be in action, when they take on Austria at SC Wiener Neustadt on Wednesday afternoon, before returning to home soil for a game with Republic of Ireland at St. George’s Park, which will be played behind closed doors on Sunday.

Both the U17s and U19s face three Elite Qualifying Round games over the next week, as they bid to reach their respective Euro Finals in Azerbaijan and Germany.

Steve Cooper’s Young Lions have home advantage in their group, which kicks-off on Thursday when they play Turkey in Chesterfield before a match against Finland at Leek Town on Saturday.

They round-off their fixtures against Ukraine at Burton Albion next Tuesday, knowing that if they can top their group then they will head to the U17 Finals in May, and even a second-placed finish could still be good enough for them.

For the U19s, they face host nation Spain, Greece and Georgia in their Elite Round group where only a first-placed finish will be good enough if they are to reach July’s Euro Finals.

Their first game against Georgia is also on Thursday afternoon, before they play the Greeks on Saturday and then Spain next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the U21s met up at St. George’s Park on Monday evening to begin their preparations for an important Euro Qualifier against Switzerland.

Southgate’s men currently top their qualifying group, but with Switzerland also challenging in the race for next year’s Euro Finals in Poland, Saturday’s clash in Thun will be a key game.

Finally, Keith Downing’s U20s squad are in South Yorkshire as they prepare to face Canada at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium on Easter Sunday.

Tickets for the U17s and U20s games are priced at just £3 for adults and £1.50 for concessions and are available via the venues.
