Born in Essex, Shelvey started his career as a teenager with Charlton Athletic, where he quickly broke into the senior squad to become their youngest first-team player at just over 16 years old before catching the attention of Liverpool.

He received his first England senior cap against San Marino in October 2012 and last featured in Roy Hodgson’s squad in October for the games with San Marino and Estonia.
