Duncan Watmore celebrated his England Under-21 call-up with a goal as Sunderland beat Exeter City 6-3 in a thrilling League Cup clash.

The young hotshot was earlier named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the first time for next month’s clashes with the USA and Norway – just ten days after netting his first Premier League goal, against Norwich.

And he was at it again at the Stadium of Light, firing in one of six Sunderland goals as Jack Rodwell doubled up and Jermain Defoe hit a hat-trick.

Fellow Under-21 squad member Jordan Pickford also enjoyed a satisfying evening, keeping a clean sheet as Preston beat Premier League Watford 1-0 to join Sunderland in the third round.

Matt Grimes helped ensure Swansea were not on the receiving end of an upset, the U20s international getting on the scoresheet as they beat York City 3-0.

Brighton were dumped out by League One Walsall but not before Jake Forster-Caskey (U21s) netted a penalty.

Karlan Ahearne-Grant also scored from the spot as his Charlton side won 4-1 at Peterborough, while fellow England Under-18 international Sheyi Ojo grabbed the winner for Wolves against Barnet - his first senior goal.

Elsewhere, U20s defender Baily Cargill enjoyed a run-out for Premier League Bournemouth as they travelled to Hartlepool and eased to a 4-0 win.

Another international of the same age group, Rolando Aarons, featured for Newcastle as they beat Northampton, as did Isaac Hayden and Moses Odubajo who helped Hull past Rochdale.

Teenage goalkeeper Christian Walton – another member of Southgate’s squad – featured for Bury against Premier League Leicester City, as did Jack Stephens for Middlesbrough during their 2-1 win at Burton Albion.

Elsewhere, Rickie Lambert converted from the spot as West Bromwich Albion needed a penalty shoot-out to see off Port Vale.
