Joe Gomez helped Liverpool keep their third clean sheet in a row on Monday

Joe Gomez’s perfect start to the season continued at the Emirates on Monday evening, quickly followed by a first call-up to England’s Under-21s squad.

Gomez – who completed a switch from Charlton to Liverpool in June – retained his place in the back four for the third successive game as the Reds drew 0-0 at Arsenal.

It was also their third clean sheet in as many games and the 19-year-old says he is loving life at Anfield.

“I’m enjoying it. To get our third clean sheet in a row is great for us as a back four and for Simon [Mignolet] as well," he said.

“Simon showed his quality, especially with deflected shots, so we’re lucky to have him behind us. Hopefully we can continue that and start getting some more goals as well.”

Liverpool dominated for large spells of the first half, and despite not coming away with the victory he felt his side deserved, Gomez was pleased with the overall performance.

“We had some great chances. To come here to the Emirates, away from home, and dominate the way we did in the first half, it was disappointing not to have put them away,” he added.

“But it was a good result in the end.”

After impressing during Liverpool’s victorious shut-outs against Aston Villa and Bournemouth, the youngster was again among the man-of-the-match contenders at the Emirates on Monday evening.

And on Tuesday morning it was confirmed he would be among England’s Under-21s for the first time.

Gomez – who has appeared for England at Under-16, U17 and U19 levels – will join Gareth Southgate’s group to take on USA’s U23 Olympic hopefuls in Preston on Thursday 3 September, before starting their Euro U21 Qualifying campaign in Norway on Monday 7 September.

Season ticket holders at Deepdale can also claim half price tickets and concessions for U18s, over 65s and students (on production of valid ID) are £5.
