England and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has headed back to the USA in a bid to get himself back fit and firing.

The 25-year-old spent time with specialists in the States earlier this season whilst recovering from a thigh injury picked up in the earlier stages of the campaign.

And after his return to action earlier this year, the former Chelsea and Manchester City star has suffered from more fitness issues with his appearances this season restricted to 18 games and just five goals.

Sturridge has endured an injury-hit season this term

"I think we have found some underlying issues that maybe relate to Daniel's issues and problems this season and the ongoing problems he's had,” explained Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

"So the medical team here, liaising with some of the medics in America, are doing everything we possibly can to give Daniel every opportunity to stay consistently fit and available."

Sturridge will see orthopaedic surgeon Dr Peter Asnis, connected with baseball outfit Boston Red Sox, about his current hip complaint.

After seeing Sturridge enjoying an impressive season last term, Rodgers is keen to get the Anfield favourite back to his best for the 2015-16 campaign.

And he revealed that’s the reason for Sturridge missing the rest of this season in a bid to help him return for pre-season in the best condition.

"It is just unfortunate for him. If you look at his career he's had little issues along the way," he added.

"But when we brought him here, we knew we wanted to give him every chance to be one of the top goalscorers in Europe.

"We have to do everything we can to get him on the training field and into the game, hence the reason for looking into the issue."
