Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge keen to sharpen up

Sturridge is looking to end the campaign strongly before the next pre-season
Daniel Sturridge admits he’s still finding his way back to full form and fitness after recovering from a long-term injury.

The England and Liverpool striker missed five months of the season with a thigh injury picked up in the first few weeks of the campaign and has been back in action since January.

But the 25-year-old admits he’s still not satisfied with his sharpness on the pitch since returning to the Reds team, despite scoring four goals in 15 appearances.

"It has taken time to get back into the groove," admitted the former Manchester City and Chelsea man.

"I have missed a lengthy time and gaining sharpness while playing games is not easy in a league like the Premier League - you can't ease yourself back in because the games are very fast.

"It has been a difficult season in terms of the injuries but I know I will come back strongly and get back to exactly how I was performing before.

"But it is going to take time, it is not going to happen overnight, I understand that."

Sturridge was part of Brendan Rodgers’ team as they reached The FA Cup semi-final earlier this week with a win against Blackburn Rovers.

And with Liverpool now looking to end the season with a trophy, as well as continue to challenge for a top-four spot, Sturridge is hoping to finish with a flourish ahead of a fresh start next term.

"I am looking forward to helping the team this season and towards next season I will be right back to where I was," he revealed.

"Because I would have had a pre-season, I will be back to the sharpness and fitness levels I had before.

"It is just the sharpness and fitness side of things. It takes a long time and that is the whole point of having a long pre-season."

Meanwhile, Sturridge has encouraged his Anfield and Three Lions team-mate Raheem Sterling to make sure he puts regular first-team football at the top of his priorities for the future.

Sterling, 20, has been the subject of speculation over his future in recent weeks, but Sturridge has urged the winger to make the most of his opportunities to play and develop with the Reds.

"I don't know what Raheem wants to do but it is just important to be able to play regularly," said Sturridge, who made a move from Manchester City to Chelsea at the age of 19 only to find his own chances of regular football diminished at Stamford Bridge.

"As long as he is playing regularly he will be happy - I don't think it is anything to do with anything other than that and I hope he will stay at the club.

"It is important, regardless of who you are, to show what you can do - not just for Raheem but any young player.

"It is important to play games and gain experience so whatever decision he makes I am behind him 100 per cent."
