Ahead of Saturday’s Tyne-Wear derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland in the Premier League, there was a mini derby set-up in the north east for some of the clubs’ younger fans.

The Northumberland Church of England Academy girls’ team made the short trip to Goals Sunderland to represent Newcastle United Foundation and play against Belmont Community School who were representing the Foundation of Light in a small-sided football match.

The game was organised as part of The FA Women and Girls programme and Building Bridges in the build-up to the derby that is taking place at St James’ Park.

The nine girls representing Newcastle Foundation attend a satellite club that takes place at their school on a weekly basis and is funded by The FA Women and Girls’ project.

All girls were new to football when the sessions started in last October and are improving as players every week.

Vicky Davies, PE teacher from Northumberland Church of England Academy, said: “Today has been an excellent opportunity for our girls to be involved in competitive sport against our local rivals. Keeping young women involved in sport is vital for their health and well-being.”

Student Chloe Bonfield added: “It was a privilege to wear the black and white shirt and represent Newcastle United and my school against Sunderland, it was a new experience for me but one I really enjoyed.”

Lisa Bell Women and Girls’ co-ordinator was in agreement, saying: “Today has been a great experience for everyone involved, both teams were a credit to their clubs and schools. The game was played in a great spirit with both teams embracing the occasion in such a big week for both clubs.”
