In February, Stoney became the first openly gay footballer in England – and in turn, helped thousands of young people also come out.

And in November, Stoney’s partner, Megan Harris, gave birth to twins.

On the pitch, the defender enjoyed a prolific campaign with Arsenal, scoring seven goals in 25 matches.

She took this goalscoring form away with England, netting the opening goal on her only appearance of the year – the 2-1 World Cup qualifying win in Ukraine.
