Luke Shaw only added two Under-21 caps to his collection in 2014, but they both came in what were the most important games of the year.
The Manchester United defender, who was part of Roy Hodgson’s senior squad for the World Cup during the summer, was with the Under-21s for their Euro play-off tie with Croatia in October.
And after slotting straight back into the group like he’d never been away, the 18-year-old put in two strong displays for the Three Lions to help secure a place in the Euro Finals next summer.
Shaw was part of the Under-21s squad in 2013 when Southgate’s team began their qualifying campaign in impressive style.
It was his form there and with Southampton which saw him move into the senior team at the start of the year.
His potential was recognised by Manchester United, who paid a world record fee for a teenager of £30m in the summer to take him north to Old Trafford.
