Despite Ben Gibson’s first England Under-21s call-up only arriving last May, the Middlesbrough defender has quickly become a familiar face and voice around the squad.

The central defender was picked by boss Gareth Southgate for the trip to Wales, after a strong end to the season with the Championship side.

And after going on to impress in training and making his debut as a substitute at the Liberty Stadium in a 3-1 win for England, he was one of the squad which travelled to the Toulon Tournament in France as an U20s group.

His commanding performances there really lodged his place in Southgate’s thoughts and Gibson retained his place for the final Euro Qualifying games in September and the Euro play-offs against Croatia.

Alongside Liam Moore, the 21-year-old formed a solid base for both legs as the Three Lions won both ties by 2-1 to seal their place in next summer’s Euro Finals.
