England Player of the Year contender: James Milner

Tuesday 16 Dec 2014

Manchester City midfielder James Milner made his 50th England appearance and won the Premier League title with City in 2014.

Milner, who still holds the record for the number of England caps at Under-21 level (46), made his senior debut as a substitute for Ashley Young in Amsterdam against the Netherlands in August 2009.

He featured nine times for Roy Hodgson’s side this year and is one of 31 players to have figured for the Three Lions in the last 12 months.

The former Leeds United youth teamer came on as a substitute in the friendlies with Denmark and Peru at Wembley and started against Ecuador in the pre-World Cup fixture in Miami.

He made one appearance in the tournament itself, starting against Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte when England already knew their fate.

Milner has only missed one of this season’s six internationals. He was a used substitute against Norway, Switzerland (his 50th cap) and Slovenia and was chosen to start against San Marino at Wembley and Scotland in Glasgow.

He proved to be as dependable as ever, with timely tackles and surging runs down the flanks.
