Jon Flanagan in action against Ecuador
Jon Flanagan got his first taste of senior international football in 2014 while on England’s World Cup standby list.

With his club coming close to the Premier League title, Flanagan was a regular in the Reds defence during the second half of last season. His displays earned him a place in Roy Hodgson’s long-squad for Brazil.

Although he was not heading to South America, he and fellow defender John Stones made the trip with the Three Lions to Miami for the pre-World Cup warm-up matches.

And he was handed his debut against Ecuador at Sunlife Stadium, replacing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain just after the hour mark.

A knee problem that arose in July as he prepared for Liverpool’s new campaign has kept the 21-year-old out of action for the last four months, preventing him adding to his England appearances.
