Coming into the year with 22 caps to his name, he didn't play in the first game against Denmark, but underlined his key attributes against Peru.

It was England's final home game before the World Cup, Peru were the visitors to Wembley. With his side leading 1-0 thanks to Daniel Sturridge's first half opener, two Baines corners in quick succession after the break helped Hodgson's men to seal victory.

His first, an out-swinger from the left, was met by the header of Gary Cahill who directed the ball home for 2-0

Five minutes later, this time from the right, the Peruvian 'keeper failed to catch his delivery and Baines' Everton team-mate Phil Jagielka tucked away the loose ball.

With Ashley Cole not included in the squad, Baines was given the no.3 jersey at the World Cup, playing in the games against Italy and Uruguay.

He continued in the position as the new season began, playing in the friendly against Norway and the European Qualifiers with Switzerland and Estonia.

However, a hamstring injury ruled him out of the last two games of the year against Slovenia and Scotland.
