DEVELOPMENT SQUAD CAPS
The central defender’s journey to the World Cup looks different to most of his England squad mates, but after a tremendous season with Burnley his selection was more than justified.
After starting out as a youngster with Oldham Athletic, where he learnt his trade as a teenager in League One, it was a move to Brentford and an impressive three-year spell in west London where he caught the eye of Burnley boss Sean Dyche and then England U21s coach Gareth Southtgate.
And after biding his time at Turf Moor before breaking into Burnley’s team in 2017, his first international call up arrived in March 2018 and was followed by an England debut against Italy at Wembley.
"James is a player I've watched since he was at Brentford. He's comfortable on the ball and a strong defender in and around the penalty area, so he's a player we are keen to see more of."Gareth Southgate
