Blackburn players celebrate play-off final glory (image courtesy of @RoversLadies)
RAMPANT ROVERS CLAIM TRIPLE TRIUMPH AND REACH CHAMPIONSHIP
After winning the Northern Premier Division twice in succession but losing both of the subsequent promotion play-offs, that third time ‘lucky’ tag was not needed by Blackburn Rovers as they steamrollered their way to the 2018-19 league title and play-off victory over Southern Division champions Coventry United - and added the League Cup to their cabinet trophy to complete a memorable hat-trick.
Gemma Donnelly’s team were simply head and shoulders above everyone else in the women’s pyramid’s third tier in a campaign which they ended with only two defeats in 35 league and Cup matches.
One of those losses was to Northern Premier runners-up Sunderland in the league, and the other was to West Ham United in the FA Cup. Every other game - all 32 of them - was won, amassing 115 goals in their 24 league games and finishing with a massive points gap of 21 between themselves and the Black Cats.
They had won 15 league games on the bounce before going down 3-0 at home to their nearest challengers in mid-March. But any faint hopes that Sunderland may have had of snatching the title were extinguished as Rovers ended the month with a 3-0 win against Derby County to confirm themselves as champions.
The title was won with five games to spare and with strike partners Saffron Jordan and Natasha Flint continuing to show no mercy to opponents. The pair went on to end the season with 32 league goals apiece, Jordan also bagging 10 and Flint six in other competitions including the promotion play-off.
As to the play-off, by the time it took place Rovers were already assured of a Championship place through application to the FA - as were Coventry by the same means. So whatever the play-off result would be, Donnelly and her team could celebrate a season of unprecedented success for the club’s women’s team.
“It was such a fantastic season for us,” recalled Donnelly as she looked back at the campaign a few years later. “Back in my first season (2013-14) we’d only avoided relegation on the last day - and I vowed that we would never be in that position again.
“In the seasons that followed we finished third, third, first and first again up to (and including) 2017-18. We went right through that season unbeaten in the league, so going into 2018-19 I knew we had something very special - but after missing out on promotion twice in a row it was do or die for us.
“By the time we got to Christmas we were comfortably ahead at the top of the table and scoring for fun - Saffron and Natasha had their own competition going on! That was great, but there’s no way we would have achieved our success unless we were together as a collective and kept that unity going.
“I had ambitious but also loyal players, and so it was great for them as well as the club when we had it confirmed that our application to join the Championship had been approved by the FA. But we still wanted to leave the National League on a high by winning the play-off match.”

With both teams already promoted through successful applications to become part of the FA Women’s Championship for the 2019-20 season, there was little more than pride and the title of FAWNL champions to be played for when Blackburn faced Coventry in the play-off at Bradford City’s Valley Parade stadium.
But in what ultimately was a comfortable victory for the all-conquering Rovers, they proved themselves to be the very best in the league as Jordan and Flint each completed their goal-filled campaign to help make it a terrific trophy treble for the Lancashire outfit.
Goals either side of half-time by the prolific strike partners put their side in control, and victory was in Rovers’ hands when Natasha Fenton put her name on the scoresheet with 19 minutes remaining.
When the final whistle blew with Blackburn the 3-0 winners, it meant not only the end of a triumphant season but also signalled the end of the then 34-year-old captain Lynda Shepherd’s playing career.
The club stalwart, a former England Under-21 and Under-23 player and a Northern Ireland senior international, had worn the Rovers colours for 10 years - which were made up of two five-year spells either side of playing for Liverpool and then Manchester City in the FA WSL.
Speaking a few years after quitting the game, Shepherd said: “I’ve got some very fond memories from my career and feel that I accomplished quite a lot. But I was happy to retire when I did. I was struggling with tendonitis in my knees and Achilles and I’d been thinking of retiring for a couple of years.
“I knew at the start of that 2018-19 season that I would pack up at the end of it. When it came, at the end of that play-off game, it was very emotional. My last few years at Blackburn had been amazing. We were so successful, and in that final season I just wanted to help the girls get up to the Championship.”

FAWNL NORTHERN PREMIER DIVISION UPS AND DOWNS 2018-19
Blackburn’s near-perfect run to the title and promotion was in stark contrast to Bradford City’s sorry season, the Bantams ending rock-bottom with zero points and 140 goals conceded.
Relegated along with Bradford were Doncaster Rovers Belles, consigned for the first time to the fourth tier of the women’s pyramid after a proud history that had seen them serial FA Cup winners in the 1980’s and the FAWNL’s first champions and League Cup winners, in the competition’s inaugural 1991-92 season.
Switching places with the Bantams and the Belles for the 2019-20 campaign would be Burnley and West Bromwich Albion, respectively champions of Division One North and Division One Midlands.
Sadly departing the FAWNL permanently were Guiseley Vixens. Founded in 1993 as Meanwood Vixens, the Yorkshire team had finished the 2018-19 season in the Northern Premier’s eighth place but, during the summer of 2019, the club was folded due to lack of players and finances
Arriving in the Northern Premier in Guiseley’s place would be Loughborough Foxes, transferred from the Southern Premier to complete what would be a Northern Division reduced from 13 to 12 teams.
