SAINTS CELEBRATE NEW CLUB NAME WITH BOUNCE BACK TO TOP FLIGHT
A season-long two-way tussle for promotion ended with Southampton Saints edging out Berkhamsted Town by a single point to reach the top flight – from which, in the previous campaign, they had been relegated under their former club name Red Star Southampton.
As Red Star they had been one of the top teams as the Women’s Football Association National League kicked off in 1991/92, finishing that first season as runners-up to Doncaster Belles in both the League and FA Cup. But from that high point they slipped down the table in successive seasons before dropping into the Southern Division.
With their change of name, however, came a change of fortune under the leadership of former Red Star player Vanessa Raynbird. After retiring from playing the by now 41-year-old ex-defender had successfully managed the club’s reserve side before taking on the senior team role following their relegation.
And her impact was immediate, Saints emphatically winning their first five Southern Division matches of the 1995/96 season, hitting 16 goals in the process. But Berkhamsted also made a great start and not only also won their opening five fixtures but then won 2-1 at Southampton, putting themselves three points clear at the top of the table.
They were unable to build on their superb early run of success, though. While they collected just 10 points from their following eight outings, Saints lost only one in 10 before travelling to Berkhamsted for the re-match with the title already virtually in their grasp.
It was Town who again came out on top, winning 1-0 to complete the double, and they went on to beat Three Bridges 3-2 in their final game of the season.
But Southampton had a superior goal difference and, as they went into their last match, only a defeat by at least six goals at home to second bottom Oxford United would hand the title to Berkhamsted. The result: a 1-1 draw and promotion for the Saints.
Returning to the National Division at the first attempt was in particular a triumph for Raynbird, who had assiduously re-invigorated the Saints senior team through the introduction of players that had served her well during her spell in charge of the reserves.
Recalling that 1995/96 campaign, Raynbird said: “There were a lot of players who were really good enough for the first team when I was managing the reserves, but for one reason or another they didn’t want to do that and I’ve got no idea if it was anything to do with me.
“But then when I became first team manager we had quite a big reshuffle and I brought a few players up into the first team. And it obviously worked because it was such a good season for us.”
The following campaign was not so good, Saints suffering immediate relegation back to the Southern Division. But they returned to the top flight at the first attempt, reached the 1999 FA Cup final (lost 2-0 to Arsenal) and were still in the National Division when Raynbird was controversially replaced just before the start of the 2001/02 season.
The women’s team had been taken under the wing of men’s club Southampton FC and John Donoghue, already a full-time employee of the at-the-time Premier League outfit, took over as manager of the women’s team.
Sadly for the Saints women, they fell out of the National Division two seasons later and in 2005 were jettisoned from the men’s club following their relegation from the Premier League. The women’s side battled on independently but folded in 2019 due to lack of players and finance.
