Arsenal legend Ian Wright wants to see Arsene Wenger backed in the transfer market

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has backed Arsene Wenger to bring the good times back to the Emirates Stadium, but only if he is given the cash to “compete properly” with their rivals.

Wenger brings his side to Wembley on Saturday for their FA Cup Semi-Final against Wigan Athletic, with pressure mounting on the Gunners to end their eight-year trophy drought.

But Wright is fully behind Wenger and believes that if he is able to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City in the transfer market, then honours will soon follow.

Wright won The FA Cup twice during his time Arsenal

"I've never been one to call for the manager," said Wright, who played under the Frenchman during his last two seasons at the club.

"But what I want him to do is to spend the kind of money that's going to get Arsenal to compete properly with Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool, who are emerging.

"If Arsene can get the money and get those players, they can get to that level.

"All I want Arsenal to do is go in for the same players that Man City and Chelsea or Liverpool might get."

Arsenal’s last honour came in 2005 when they won The FA Cup, by beating Manchester United on penalties in The Final in Cardiff.

The Londoners remain many peoples' favourites to lift this year’s Cup, with Championship side Wigan standing in their way of The Final this weekend and Hull City and Sheffield United contesting the other Semi-Final on Sunday.

But Wright knows it will not be easy, with Uwe Rosler’s Latics looking to retain The Cup following their stunning victory over Manchester City in last year’s Final and then knocking them out again in the Sixth Round this term.

"Arsenal are the better team on paper, but if that was the case then Manchester City would be in the Semi-Final," he told TheFA.com.

"Wigan have proven that they can take a scalp and they'll be up for it.

"So Arsenal won't be taking them for granted because if they do, it will be a big mistake.

"I think they'll be very professional because they're going to have to be, as Wigan have got a chance to retain The Cup.

"And if they can beat Arsenal, then they'll have a good chance of doing it.

"So it's a massive, massive carrot for Wigan to do well as well."
