Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton admits he was flattered to be touted for a potential England call-up last month.

The 28-year-old has been in impressive form with the Clarets this season following their return to the Premier League.

With Three Lions squad regulars Fraser Forster and Ben Foster both out with long term injuries, Heaton’s name was mentioned as a possibility for Roy Hodgson’s group to face Lithuania and Italy in March.

But the former Manchester United and Cardiff City man says he’s only focused on helping Sean Dyche’s side survive in the top flight this season at the moment.

"I was aware there was a long shot of it and I’m like anyone else that I want to play international football, but it feels premature at the minute," he told Turf, Burnley’s official programme for Saturday’s game with Arsenal.

"My main focus is to keep playing for Burnley and to keep learning. I’ve only been playing in the Premier League for part of a season really.

"By no means would I ever get carried away with that. It was more the situation with injuries that developed from I think."

Heaton is no stranger to international football, having picked up caps at U16, U17, U18, U19 and Under-21 level for the Three Lions between 2001 and 2009.

And the Chester-born stopper was pleased to have been linked with what would have been a first ever senior call-up.

"Naturally, it was nice to get that recognition," he admitted.

"But for me it’s all about improving and performing week in and week out for this football club and helping to keep us where we are now."
