England goalkeeper Nick Pope picks out his World Cup memories ahead of Russia 2018

As the Burnley goalkeeper prepares to join the England squad for this summer’s trip to Russia, we sat down with him to relive some of his World Cup memories.

Nick Pope was named as one of England's three goalkeepers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia

I would say my first real and vivid memories of a World Cup were in 2002, when it was in South Korea and Japan.

There are a few small memories from France ’98 but I was only six then so it’s not as clear and I’d say one of my first real international football memories was David Trezeguet’s goal in the final of Euro 2000.

But I really remember David Beckham’s penalty in 2002, against Argentina, so I’d say that was my first real World Cup memory.

You obviously see all of the videos from the era just before that, things like Gazza in ’96 when I was only four, and of course Italia ’90.

So it’s something that I’ve always looked forward to every two years, when the major tournaments come around

It’s something which, at the start of the season, I wouldn’t have dreamed about and no-one would’ve even written or spoken about.

It’s just all come to light in the last few months and now I’m here, it’s time to enjoy it and prove myself.

The Three Lions have two matches before they head to Russia, against Nigeria at Wembley on Saturday 2 June and then Costa Rica in Leeds on Thursday 6 June.
