Blackburn Rovers continued their perfect start to the season as they comfortably swept past West Bromwich Albion 2-0.

In a weekend with few games in the league, Rovers were given the chance to close the gap to leaders Middlesbrough in the Northern Division.

And Rovers made no mistake against the Baggies after Natasha Fenton’s free-kick eluded everybody and drifted in.

Then with 10 minutes to go Saffron Jordan was able to spin and shoot expertly to seal a hard-earned victory.

The only other Northern Division clash came at Riverside Pavilion where third placed Leicester City were stunned by Stoke City as they won 4-3 thanks to a late strike from Kelsey Richardson.

There were no ties in the Southern Division as sides took a break from league action to focus on the cup.

FA WPL League Cup

South-east side Ipswich Town produced one of the upsets of the round as they edged past FA WPL Southern side C&K Basildon to progress to the next round - Zoe Cossey’s brilliant chip procing the difference.

There was another shock in the cup as high-flyers Middlesbrough were dumped out of the competition by Loughborough Vixens 2-0.

First half goals from Lindsey Tugby and Charlotte Cooper were enough for the midlands side to progress into the second round.

Goals from Alison Hall and Helen Dermody helped Coventry United show their class to defeat Stevenage Ladies at Hertingfordbury Park.

Derby County required extra-time to get the better of Bradford City in a 5-2 thriller.

A hat-trick from Andi Bell, including a last-minute penalty to send the match into extra-time, as well as goals from Sophia Bonser and Karagh Tait put County into the hat for the next round.

FA WPL Plate

Run in parallel with the FA WPL Cup, this competition gave Swindon Town a chance to forget their league form against Maidenhead United.

And they certainly completed that task with a hat-trick from Annie Martin, a brace from Mia Mugford as well as strikes from Emily Arrell and Natalie Goodright.

Elsewhere there was a 2-1 win for Long Eaton United over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Game of the week

Leicester City were edged out 4-3 by Stoke City in the FA WPL Cup thanks to a last-gasp winner.

Leigh Dugmore gave the hosts the lead but strikes from Hannah Keryakoplis and Rachael Ball meant it was the visitors who went in ahead at the break.

Holly Morgan poked the ball over before Rosie Axten restored Leicester’s advantage heading into the final ten minutes.

With a minute to spare, an Ashleigh Hayes leveller looked to have given Steve Swanwick’s side a point but Kelsey Richardson’s 92nd minute effort snatched all three points for the Potters.

Goal of the week

Zoe Cossey’s exquisite second-half chip from outside the box was all it took for Ipswich Town to overcome C&K Basildon.

The winger showed immaculate technique to loft the ball into the net and give the underdogs a famous victory.

Manager of the week

It has been a hard start to the season for Swindon Town but their performance against Maidenhead should give them a much-needed confidence boost.

Manager Leonie Wade will be delighted with the way her side were able to score at will during the Plate clash and will hope to continue that form into the league.

Player of the week

Andi Bell was in inspired form for Derby County as her hat-trick helped the Rams come back to win 5-2 in the FA WPL League Cup.

A last-minute penalty and two extra-time goals ensure she picked up the match ball in a thrilling cup victory.
