Paul Simpson says U20s prepared to face World Cup hosts in front of sell-out crowd

England Under-20s will face World Cup hosts South Korea in front of a sold-out crowd of 46,000 fans on Friday.

The Young Lions go into their final Group A game knowing that if they can avoid defeat, it will be enough to take them into the knock-out stage.

But head coach Paul Simpson and his squad know that they’ll be in for a hard game against the Koreans, who are already through following two victories over Guinea and Argentina.

"It will be a really big occasion and we're looking forward to the game,” said Simpson.

"We know they're a good side, they’re very quick in forward areas and strong defensively so we expect it to be tough game.

"The fans will make it a tremendous atmosphere, it will be a really loud stadium and I don't think there will be many supporting England, so we will have to raise our game and play to our potential.

"Hopefully that will be enough to entertain the Korea Republic crowd and enough to entertain us as coaches.”

The majority of the squad have some knowledge of what to expect when they run out at the Suwon World Cup, as they previously faced them at the same venue in a friendly tournament last November.

That game ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Young Lions, who were under the temporary charge of Paul Williams at the time.

And that encounter has allowed Simpson a chance to look back at the game as well as keep tabs on their hosts during the World Cup so far.

"We always knew Friday was going to be tough as we know that from playing them in November,” he added.

"I wasn't the coach in November, but I maintain the fact they're a good side with good individual players.

"I know we'll be prepared for it and we've got to go out and play with the same sort of intensity that we started with against Guinea [on Tuesday] and hopefully be a bit more clinical in front of goal.”
