England U20s 1-1 Guinea

Young Lions forced to settle for a point after Lewis Cook's goal is cancelled out

Tuesday 23 May 2017

England were forced to settle for a point in their second U20 World Cup game, after a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Guinea.

Paul Simpson’s side looked to be on their way to victory after captain Lewis Cook had put the Young Lions in front in the early stages of the second half.

But an unfortunate own goal from England defender Fikayo Tomori ensured the Africans took a share of the spoils after an entertaining game with both sides attacking each other at will.

In the early stages, it was all England as the Young Lions had a spate of half-chances in the opening stages.

It started when Seyi Ojo’s wicked cross from the right picked out Dominic Solanke in the middle, only for the Chelsea striker to place his header back across goal and just wide of the post.

Ojo was provider again a few minutes later, as he produced another great delivery, this time from the left, into the path of Adam Armstrong who turned the pacy cross towards goal and narrowly wide.

Ademola Lookman then saw a low drive drift wide of the post, after he’d skipped past his man down the right before bearing down on goal.

And Armstrong went close again, seeing a low shot roll narrowly past the post after collecting a pass from Ainsley Maitland-Niles, before firing a left-footed volley over the bar as England looked to break the deadlock.

But it was Guinea who really should have taken the lead though, as Daoude Camara broke into the box before his cut-back bobbled into the path of Oumar Toure, who smashed a shot high over the bar from close range.

The second half was only six minutes old when Toure came even closer when he fired a shot against the base of the post, which rebounded to safety before the Young Lions could clear their lines.

To rub salt into Guinean wounds, England took the lead two minutes later as Cook fired a shot at goal from 25 yards which beat Sekouba Camara to seemingly put the Young Lions on their way.

But just six minutes later, Guinea were back level in the most unfortunate of circumstances for England, as Tomori’s back-pass from the half way line caught out Dean Henderson and rolled agonisingly past him and into the goal.

Both sides had opportunities to take the three points, with Jonjoe Kenny coming closest in stoppage time when he shot into the side netting after a substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin had picked out his run forward.

Simpson’s side will now round off their Group A fixtures on Friday, when they take on host nation Korea Republic in Suwon.
