'It feels unbelievable'

Verdict from York City and Macclesfield Town on their Buildbase FA Trophy Final

Sunday 21 May 2017

York City won The Buildbase FA Trophy for the second time in their history with a pulsating 3-2 victory over Macclesfield Town at Wembley Stadium connected by EE.

Goals from Jon Parkin and Vadaine Oliver were cancelled out by Rhys Browne and Ollie Norburn in the first half.

But substitute Aidan Connolly toe-poked the Minstermen to glory late in the day.

Two of the match's top performers shared their verdict:

The FA ;

York City man of the match Sean Newton said:

“It feels unbelievable.

“From January onwards, this side was so unlucky not to stay up.

“Every week, we put a shift and we got points where we weren’t meant to, and I’m made up for our fans.

“Since I’ve come to this club, they’ve had a bad time, and they’ve been unbelievable since I’ve been here, and that’s just a little something for them.

“The end of the season was three weeks ago – this is the start of our season.

“They [Macclesfield] are a very good side in this league and I think if the games never piled up like they did for them, they could have got in the play-offs.

“We did what we did to them at their place, when we beat them 3-1 [on March 28].

“We were dogged and horrible and we knew we had that little bit of quality to break them down, and that’s what we’ve done.”

The FA ;

Macclesfield Town winger Rhys Browne said:

“We had good chances to get back into the game and maybe put the game away.

“They cleared some off the lie – sometimes you can tell it’s not going to be your day.

“I’ve never felt something like scoring at Wembley before. It felt like it was rocking with those Macclesfield fans, so that was one of the best feelings I’ve had so far in my career. It was something that I’ll always remember.

“I’ll be back. I’m not going to sit and say that I got a second place medal – I want to get a winner’s medal.

“There are some players in our dressing room that have only been here once and they’re coming to the latter stages in their careers

“I’m just starting my career and I’m only 21 years-old, so that ambition to come back here is second to none.”
