Plymouth Argyle secure SSE Women's FA Cup shock with dramatic victory over Gillingham

Teams are one step closer to getting their hands on the SSE Women's FA Cup trophy

Natasha Knapman and Ezme Wells’ extra-time strikes saw Plymouth Argyle produce an SSE Women’s FA Cup shock by beating Gillingham in a stunning second-round tie.

The FA WPL South West high-flyers shocked their WPL Southern Division opposition with two goals in quick succession after the sides were locked at 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes.

Zoe Cunningham had given the home side the lead with just two minutes played, only for Jade Keogh to score directly from a corner for Gillingham.

And it seemed like penalties may be in store until Knapman and Wells stepped up, with Plymouth now looking forward to a potential third-round fairytale.

They were not the only team to cause a shock, as two superb finishes from Megan McKenzie helped Newcastle United upset Nottingham Forest while Brislinton beat Swindon in a thriller.

Burnley defied the two-league difference between they and Stoke City, with the two unable to be separated after 120 minutes before the visitors prevailed 4-1 on spot-kicks

Penalties were also needed for Ipswich Town however, with Gemma Moore coming off the bench and scoring the winning spot-kick as they downed Stevenage 3-0 in the shootout.

Natasha Thomas had equalised for the East Anglian side with just 20 minutes of normal time to play at Hertford Town.

That came after Amy Makewell opened up the scoring for Stevenage, with a delightful finish after some neat build-up play.

Penalties were also needed for Derby County, as they beat Hull City, while Cherelle Khassal’s extra-time strike sent Chichester through to the third round after a pulsating victory over C&K Basildon.

Capitalising on a slip-up, the Irish international burst forward and coolly converted to seal the 4-2 win after the two sides had been set at 2-2 at full-time.

And Luton Town also needed an extra 30 minutes to beat Harlow Town 3-2, Jess McKay’s stunning winner a strike deserving of winning any game.

There were no such problems for Lewes, beating Enfield Town 7-0, and Middlesbrough as they beat Farsley Celtic 8-1, while Charlton Athletic overcame Queens Park Rangers 5-0.

Keynsham Town got the better of Southampton by the odd goal, as did Cardiff against Milton Keynes Dons, with Leicester City winning 3-0 at Chorley.
