Mossley secure Emirates FA Cup progress after win over Glossop North End

Mossley, South Shields and Brocton progress to FA Cup first qualifying round

Saturday 19 Aug 2017

It was a return to Mossley to forget for Glossop North End joint-manager Steve Halford as his side exited the Emirates FA Cup following a 2-0 defeat.

Halford spent 18 months as Mossley boss between 2012 and 2013 but, after conceding a second goal, saw goalkeeper Paul Phillips sent off.

Elliott Harrison had opened the scoring for the Lilywhites in the first half before Tom Dean added a second.

Dean missed his original penalty but found the net with the rebound with Phillips reacting angrily to the celebrations and being shown a straight red card.

Elsewhere, South Shields have progressed beyond the preliminary round for just the second time this century after a 3-1 win over Bridlington Town at Mariners Park.

The Mariners were indebted to former Newcastle United midfielder Matty Pattison who scored the goal of the game with an excellent left-footed shot.

The hosts took the lead just before the break when Luke Sullivan tapped home but Benn Lewis brought Bridlington Town level.

However, Pattison put the FA Vase holders back ahead before Gavin Cogdon sealed their place in the first qualifying round and knock out their lower league opponents.

Meanwhile, Brocton secured one of the stand-out results of the preliminary round with a 2-0 win over Gresley to book their place in the hat.

Joe Hartshorne put the Badgers ahead after 31 minutes after Leon Taylor had hit the post. Gresley saw a goal ruled out for offside soon after.

It meant Brocton took their slender lead into the break, and their progress was secured when Jack Edwards got a second with a minute of normal time left to play.

Two second-half goals from Jordan Johnson was enough to see Leek Town beat Cammell Laird 1907 2-0 while Shaun Avis’ successful effort gave Mildenhall Town a 1-0 win over Framlingham Town.

Captain Steven Hutchins scored a 14-minute hat-trick for Moneyfields as they cruised past Badshot Lea 3-0 while Jack Hopkins also scored a trio as Phoenix Sports beat Steyning Town 5-0.
