Dier pleased with progress

Tottenham Hotspur's Eric Dier believes his team-mates are growing towards honours

Thursday 20 Apr 2017

Eric Dier believes Tottenham Hotspur are progressing strongly together as a team, as they target a place in The Emirates FA Cup Final this season.

The England man has been a mainstay in the Spurs side this term and will be lining up at Wembley on Saturday as Mauricio Pochettino’s men face London and Premier League title rivals Chelsea in the first of the weekend's semi-finals.

And the 23-year-old believes that if the Lilywhites can keep improving as they have in recent years, then the honours will naturally follow.

“I think as a team we’re progressing,” he told the official Emirates FA Cup match programme for the game.

“We finished third last season and we’re second in the league at the moment and also in the semi-finals of The FA Cup, so that is progression.

“We just need to keep that going and not get too obsessed on the idea of winning trophies.

“If we keep progressing, that should happen naturally and the trophies will follow.”

Spurs are back on familiar territory at Wembley too, having already played their Champions League and Europa League fixtures at the national stadium earlier this season.

And whilst Dier insists their results under the arch were disappointing, he believes that is more down to the team’s collective performance rather than the venue.

“I just think, as a team, we didn’t perform well enough in the Champions League this season,” he admitted.

“It could’ve been at White Hart Lane, it could’ve been at Wembley or it could have been on a park, but we didn’t perform well enough as a team in the Champions League and that was very disappointing for us.

“I don’t think anyone will ever say that Wembley was the reason and I don’t think anyone should. At the end of the day, football is on a piece of grass and we just didn’t perform well enough in it.

“Chelsea are a very experienced team and I’m sure they’ve all played at Wembley many times before too.

“I don’t think that’s going to have any impact on it or make any difference to the game. I just expect a really good match and we’ve created a bit more of a rivalry with Chelsea over the years so it will be an interesting game.”
