Wenger focused on Cup

Arsene Wenger wants a record 13th Emirates FA Cup for Arsenal this term

Arsene Wenger is aiming to add another Emirates FA Cup title to his and Arsenal’s already-impressive record in the competition.

The Frenchman takes his side into Sunday’s semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley with relatively recent memories of the Gunners’ FA Cup Final victories in 2014 and 2015.

If he can lead Arsenal past Pep Guardiola’s men and onto Cup glory again this year, it would be his seventh FA Cup title and lead his club to what would be a record 13th success.

And Wenger admits his side are fully focused on securing victory, with The Cup offering them their only chance of silverware this season.

“The FA Cup is a very important game for me because it’s the next game and because it’s an opportunity to win a trophy this season,” said Wenger.

“So of course we are all fully focused on that. My future is Sunday. My commitment is total and I am only focused on Arsenal.

“Of course we are ambitious because we have done it before and we know we can do it.

“In the previous semi-finals, we were super favourites but in this game it is between two teams who are very close to each other in the Premier League so it is much more level on chances at the start. We know we absolutely have to be at our best to qualify.”

Wenger is also looking forward to a return to Wembley for the game, having experienced two Cup Final victories at the new stadium to supplement his own recollections of the old stadium.

“My memories are of the old Wembley, I played in 1998 against Newcastle in the Final,” he added.

“For me, when I was a kid, I watched the games at Wembley on television, so that was the first time for me to reach Wembley and to play in the Final was special for me.

“Now we have been a bit more used to it, it is still massive and for me what is great at Wembley is that you see your fans coming in and it is a unique experience for them and their children in life that they never forget.

“You want them to be pleased when they come out and go home.”
