Mark Sampson believes England's 3-0 win over Austria will fill his players with confidence ahead of Euro 2017.

Ellen White, Lucy Bronze and Isobel Christiansen scored the goals in Milton Keynes as the Lionesses registered a comfortable victory in their final home match before the finals in the summer.

Austria have also made it to the Netherlands and only lost one match in qualifying, so Sampson was rightly delighted with his team's display.

He said: "It was big to win. It was important. We needed that. We were under a bit of pressure after one win in six.

"If we want to be the best team in the world, we need to start winning matches consistently.

"I'm particularly pleased with the reaction of the team in the second half.

"Our performance in the second half was excellent, from one to 11. There was a really good balance to our game and I don't think Austria quite got to grips with that.

"The players will take a lot of confidence from their ability to bounce back in the second half.

"We looked assured tonight, we looked confident and we got a deserved victory."

England open their Euro 2017 campaign against Scotland in Utrecht on 19 July, before facing Spain in Breda on 23 July and Portugal in Tilburg on 27 July.

As Sampson alluded to, his side had only won one match before the Austria game, albeit against World Cup holders USA.

They missed a host of opportunities in the 1-1 draw with Italy on Friday night, but went some way to rectifying that at Stadium MK.

The Lionesses are fourth in the FIFA rankings, their highest-ever position, and Sampson trusts his players to arrive in the Netherlands feeling ready to justify their elevated status.

He added: "We are the fourth best team in the world. There's a league table and we're fourth on it. I thought [against Austria] we looked like we were right up there.

"The fans will go away thinking England have got a chance in the Euros, and that's what we wanted.

"These players will go to Holland and try to achieve something special. That brings with it a challenge, a responsibility and an excitement. Every day between now and 19 July is do or die. The players have been smashing it behind the scenes.

"We won't go into the tournament feeling like we've short-changed ourselves.

"We will go into the tournament fully prepared physically, mentally and tactically. And whatever obstacles we're hit with, we have to find our way to overcome them."

Sampson said he was delighted that a defender, a midfielder and a forward all got on the scoresheet - and he reserved special praise for Chelsea youngster Millie Bright.

The 23-year-old was in the back four against Italy but was pushed into midfield against Austria - and she performed admirably.

Sampson said: "Millie really became a Lioness today, the way she was strutting about the park.

"She grew into the game and got better and better, so she'll go back to Chelsea in a very good place both physically and mentally, knowing she can be a big player for us in the summer."
