Daniel Sturridge: Getting the three points all that mattered

Sunday 09 Oct 2016

Daniel Sturridge says consistency is key for England, after the Three Lions racked up a second World Cup qualifying victory by beating Malta.

The Liverpool striker opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark, with Dele Alli adding a second shortly afterwards.

Interim manager Gareth Southgate admitted that his side should have scored more goals, but Sturridge simply pleased to have racked up another victory.

“It was important for us to win,” said the 27-year-old. “We were playing at home and it was the manager's first game, so we were looking forward to the performance that we were going to put in.

“I think we did well. For us, it's important to just keep winning games – it's not about how many goals you score. If we win 4-0, 5-0 or 1-0, it's the exact same result and that's what matters most.

“As long as we keep winning games and performing well, that's the most important thing for me. We have got that consistency building.”

Sturridge had words of praise for Southgate, who only assumed the manager’s role ten days ago: “Gareth has done an amazing job to come in on such short notice and put his stamp on the team and how he wants us to play, along with Steve.

“They allowed us to express ourselves and play good football. He's been a breath of fresh air, and we all enjoy working for him and training hard for him.”

The Three Lions now head to Slovenia, with the sides meeting in Ljubljana on Tuesday evening. With only two days’ training between the matches, Sturridge says he and his team-mates must quickly focus on how to go about continuing their good start to the campaign.

“It's going to be a difficult game for us but it's about our preparation – we're not worried about them,” he said.

“We're worried about how we're going to go out there and do what we do best. We've just got to go out there and play our football and worry about nothing but ourselves. As long as we do that, the result will come.”
