England manager Roy Hodgson was pleased with his side's pre-EURO 2016 friendly against Turkey – and not just because it ended in victory.

Jamie Vardy struck an 83rd-minute winner to settle a closely-fought encounter in Manchester, after Harry Kane's early opener had been cancelled out by Hakan Calhanoglu's leveler.

And Hodgson said that, while he was satisfied with the result itself, he was also happy that the game identified areas where the Three Lions can still get better.

"Wins are always pleasing," Hodgson told the media after the game. "There were some pleasing aspects and I thought that in large swathes of the game we played reasonably well.

"But it was also positive for me in the sense that it showed we aren't the finished article and there is still work to be done.

"When you play against a team of Turkey's quality – because they had some good moments and played quite well – it shows that these next three weeks are going to be vital for us in terms of trying to make certain that we can stay compact at all times and make life easier for ourselves defensively."
