Sir Geoff Hurst has backed The FA People’s Cup, with free registration allowing more people to get involved and play football.

The deadline for teams and individuals to register for this year’s People’s Cup is Friday 15 January, with ten different categories giving an opportunity for players across the range to stake their own claim of Cup glory.

And as a World Cup winner with England in 1966, Sir Geoff has urged amateur players from across the country to sign up now.

"I think it’s great to encourage more people to play the sport, which is what The FA People’s Cup is doing," he said.

"At that level, it’s great to enjoy the sport and the greater number of players who are involved in the game at grassroots level, it can only be beneficial to the game."

The People’s Cup not only offers the chance of a medal for its winning teams, but there’s also the opportunity of being at The Emirates FA Cup Final at Wembley in May for those who taste success.

That’s a venue with which Hurst remains synonymous, after his hat-trick in the World Cup final against West Germany secured England their title almost 50 years ago.

And he advises those who do sign up to the People’s Cup to give it their best shot, with the first rounds being played later this month.

"Winning is what the game is all about, so someone will win The FA People’s Cup and have their own glory," he added, whilst attending the announcement of a commemorative exhibition of the ’66 World Cup earlier this week.

"I wish them all the luck in the competition."

The first round will be taking place between 22–24 January and ahead of that weekend, there will be a series of squad-building events around the country, enabling individuals without existing teams to sign up, meet potential team-mates ahead of the games and talk tactics. These events will happen the weekend before in order to give individuals the time to meet new team-mates.

In total, there are ten categories in the competition: Adult Male, Adult Female, U16 Boys, U16 Girls, U14 Boys, U14 Girls, Male Veterans, Female Veterans, Walking Football (Over 50s & mixed) and Disability.
